The line chart illustrates the number of foreign students from four different countries residing in Australia.

In terms of Malaysia and Singapore, the highest number of students, approximately 8,000, were from Malaysia, while the lowest number, around 2,000, were from Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Singapore in 1982. The number of students from Hong Kong remained relatively stable at around 9,000 until 1990, then experienced a surge to 17,000 in 1997, before dropping to 16,000 in the following three years. Singapore witnessed a significant increase in the number of students, rising from 2,000 in 1982 to 16,000 in 2000, surpassing both Hong Kong and Malaysia in 1998.

Turning to Indonesia and Hong Kong, the trend for both countries fluctuated significantly throughout the given period. The number of Indonesian students was 2,000 in 1982 and increased considerably to 10,000 in 1994, surpassing Hong Kong before reaching its peak at 26,000 in 1998. The figures for Hong Kong students fluctuated between 3,000 in 1987 and approximately 19,000 in 1997, with a slight decrease before stabilizing at 18,000 in 2000.

In conclusion, the number of students from Malaysia and Singapore showed a clear increase, while the figures for Hong Kong and Indonesia experienced dramatic fluctuations.

                         In terms of Malaysia and Singapore, around 8,000 students were from Malaysia, which was the highest, while only 2,000 pupils were from Indonesia, Hong Kong and Singapore, each, which was the lowest in 1982. The figure for Hong Kong students almost stabilized at around 9,000 until 1990, before surging to 17,000 in 1997 and dropping to 16,000 in the next three years. The number of Singapore students surged significantly from 2,000 in 1982 to 16,000 in 2000 after outnumbering Hong Kong and Malaysia in 1998.

                        Turning to Indonesia and Hong Kong, the trend for both countries fluctuated dramatically throughout the given period. The number of pupils in Indonesia amounted to 2,000 in 1982 and it increased considerably to 10,000 in 1994, where it surpassed Hong Kong before peaking at 26,000 in 1998.                         To sum up, we can see that the figures for students in Malaysia and Singapore increased clearly, while those for Hong Kong and Indonesia surged dramatically.
