Sample Answer 1

The line graph provides information about the water consumption in different sectors, while the table illustrates the consumption of water in Brazil and Congo.

Regarding water consumption at the global level by various sectors, between 1900 and 1920, agriculture consumed approximately 500 km3 of water before reaching 1,000 km3 in 1950. Interestingly, water consumption increased significantly by 500 cubic meters in 1960 and then peaked at 3,000 km3 in 2000. Shifting to the figures for industrial and domestic consumption, from 1900 to 1940, both figures remained relatively stable at approximately 10 km3. Notably, the figure for industrial usage rose considerably to 900 km3 in 2000, surpassing domestic consumption (200 km3).

Turning to the consumption of water in Brazil and Congo in 2000, the population in Brazil totaled 176 million, whereas in Congo it was only 5.2 million. The water consumption in Brazil amounted to 359 m3, while in Congo it was only 8 m3.

In summary, it can be seen that the highest amount of water was consumed by the agricultural sector, while the lowest was used for domestic purposes.

Sample Answer 3

Band 6.5

The graphs give information about the use of water for different purposes around the world, plus water consumption per person in 2 different nations.

To begin with, the amount of water used for agriculture remained fairly steady between 1900 and 1940. After that, it showed a dramatic increase and reached 3000 in 2000. However, the industrial consumption of water was very low until 1930, followed by a rise of about 1000 from 1940 to 2000. Initially, water use for domestic purposes was about zero. Then, it started slowly rising from 1930 to 2000.

We can see that the total population of Brazil was 176 million, and the total irrigation land was 26,500 Km2. The water used per person was 359m3. However, Congo's total population was 5.2 million and its irrigation land was 100 km2. The water consumption per person was 8m3, which was much less compared to Brazil.

Overall, it can be seen that a greater amount of water is used for agriculture worldwide. However, very little water is used for industrial and domestic purposes. Water consumption in Brazil was much higher than in Congo.
