Sample Answer 7

Band 6.5

The bar chart compares the percentage of owned and rental houses in England and Wales for the period ranging from 1918 to 2011.

Regarding rental accommodation, 78 per cent of households used to live in this type in 1918. After that, the trend of renting properties declined erratically to 50% (1961), crossing 40% (1981) before falling to a low of just above 30% in 2001. The figure in 2011 went up slightly to approximately 36%.

Turning to the proportion of owned houses, in 1918, it was the lowest at 22%, which was one-third of the property on rent. The percentage of owned accommodation jumped to 50% in 1971, before peaking at around 70 per cent in 2001, which was recorded as the highest. After a decade (in 2011), the percentage again fell by 5 per cent, from 69% to 64%.

In summary, it can be clearly seen that, as time passed, people liked to buy their own housing property rather than living in a rental house. Therefore, the figure for buying one's own house increased significantly throughout the period, while for rental accommodation it decreased throughout the entire period.
